Sr. Research Associate / Associate Scientist / Associate Engineer – Downstream Processing

Overall responsibility:

The successful candidate will be a key part of the downstream processing group, a group that is responsible for isolating and purifying proteins from microbial cell culture using a variety of industrial purification processes. Responsibilities will be centered around hands-on lab experimentation to directly support process development. Additionally, this role may support a platform production process at a CMO for early-phase scale-up.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

Develop and optimize protein purification unit operations.
Design and execute lab-scale experiments.
Synthesize, and present conclusions and recommendations.
Troubleshoot platform processes with new proteins.
Author technical reports and batch records.
Monitor and analyze production trends.
Collaborate with fermentation and analytical groups on process and method development.

Skills and attributes:

Fundamental understanding of protein biochemistry to support the design of process steps and stable liquid formulations.
Core knowledge of protein purification and analytical methods.
Experience with harvest, clarification, chromatography (AKTA), and ultrafiltration operations.
Strong technical writing and computational skills.
Highly-motivated and able to work independently.
Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of cross-functional teams.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the presentation of data.
Excels at multitasking in a fast-paced start-up environment.

Education and Experience:

B.S. or M.S. degree in biochemical engineering/biotechnology or closely related fields and
2-5 years of relevant experience in bioprocess development, scale-up, and tech transfer.
