Thomas Leggett

Senior Vice President of Finance, Chief Financial Officer

 

Thomas Leggett has more than 15 years of experience leading, obtaining financing for and advising life sciences companies. Most recently, he was the Treasurer and Head of Business Development Finance at Purdue Pharma L.P., where he executed five strategic transactions. Prior to that, Leggett spent over 13 years in investment banking during which he raised over $6 billion in equity and $26 billion in debt while advising on over $32 billion in mergers and acquisitions transactions for healthcare clients.

Leggett began his career in Management Consulting at Mitchell Madison Group before transitioning to Elance, Inc., a Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Byers-backed internet start-up company. After earning his MBA, he started his investment banking career in the J.P. Morgan Securities Healthcare Group. His transactions included the acquisition of Guidant Corporation to Boston Scientific, the initial public offering of Coley Pharmaceuticals and an equity offering for Celgene. Following his time at J.P. Morgan, Leggett became a Vice President at Lazard Frères & Company, where he worked on the acquisitions of PolyMedica by Medco Health Solutions and Viasys Healthcare by Cardinal Health, among other transactions.

Leggett then spent five years at UBS Securities as an Executive Director in the Healthcare Group with a primary focus in the biopharmaceutical sector. His transactions during this time included advising Akebia Therapeutics, Amgen, Baxter International, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Momenta Pharmaceuticals.

In 2015, Leggett joined Purdue Pharma L.P. as Treasurer and Head of Business Development Finance. During his time at Purdue, the company announced five strategic transactions, including the worldwide collaboration to develop and commercialize lemborexant with Eisai Co., Ltd. and the recently announced alliance for the joint U.S. commercialization of Symproic® (naldemedine) with Shionogi & Co., Ltd.

Leggett received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Columbia University and earned his Master’s in Business Administration in Finance from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

What do you like most about Axcella?

I’m extremely excited at the potential of our approach, technology and pipeline candidates to radically shift the way we treat patients, especially in areas of unmet need. And of course, I’m drawn to the strong culture and people who make Axcella such a special company.

What is your greatest non-professional accomplishment?

Being the father of two great little girls.

Jerry Maguire – I love the comeback story

If you were a superhero, what super power would you have?

To manipulate time. I’d want the ability to make all of those memorable, but fleeting moments last longer – like the birth of your children or the Mets winning the World Series.

It’s a tie between Haruki Murakami and Michael Lewis.
